2022 Hematology/Oncology Technician Award

The HOPA Hematology/Oncology Technician Award recognizes a HOPA technician member who demonstrates excellence in his/her work and a commitment to hematology/oncology pharmacy practice in an organized healthcare setting.

May Lo is from Sacramento, CA. She has completed her Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Sociology at California State University of Sacramento and Associate’s of Arts degree on Social Studies at Cosumnes River College. After college, she was employed at Rite Aid pharmacy as a pharmacy clerk for 3 years. She was then promoted to technician status after encouragement by her supervisor and colleagues. She went through the Rite Aid technician program to obtain her technician license. She was in this role for 9 years. She then accepted a job at Pavilion Pharmacy at UC Davis Medical Center in 2012. After 3 years with Pavilion Pharmacy, she transferred to UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center Pharmacy and then later moved to her current role in Oncology Specialty Pharmacy.

In her current position, May plays an integral role in patient care. She assists patients with obtaining oral oncolytic at a more affordable cost by utilizing co-pay cards, grant funding, in house waiver program and/or manufacturer free drug programs. May also assist in setting up timely shipments and packaging of these medications. Another aspect of her position involves maintaining inventory of these high-cost medications. As the team continue to grow, May enjoys creating training guides and providing hands on training for new technicians. She finds her role in patient care extremely fulfilling and is always eager to find new methods for improving efficiency in the workplace.
